The New York Giants could be forced to navigate the foreseeable future without quarterback Jaxson Dart, but trading with the Dallas Cowboys for Joe Milton is not necessary — or even possible.
Following Dart's potentially season-ending knee injury in New York's 28-6 Monday Night Football loss to the Los Angeles Rams, some fans have floated Milton as a potential quarterback option for the Giants. However, NorthJersey.com's Art Stapleton quickly pushed back on the idea Wednesday on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“Joe Milton is on the Cowboys’ practice squad. If someone tells you Giants should trade for him, stop listening to that person. They don’t know the NFL.”
Because Milton is on Dallas' practice squad rather than its active roster, the Giants would not need to trade for him. NFL rules allow teams to sign players directly from another organization's practice squad to their active 53-man roster.
The Giants would therefore have a path to acquire Milton without sending the Cowboys any draft capital or players in return if they decided to pursue the 26-year-old quarterback.

Milton joined Dallas after previously spending time with the New England Patriots. The former Tennessee and Michigan quarterback entered the NFL as a sixth-round selection by New England in the 2024 NFL Draft before eventually landing with the Cowboys.
For now, the Giants' immediate concern remains Dart's health following the knee injury he suffered against Los Angeles. Losing their starting quarterback for an extended period would present a significant early-season challenge for New York.
The Giants fell to 1-1 with Monday's loss after opening their season with a victory over the Cowboys.
New York will attempt to rebound in Week 3 when it returns to MetLife Stadium to host the Tennessee Titans, who enter the matchup at 0-2. Kickoff is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. ET on CBS.
