The city of New York has to be in bedlam at the moment. The sporting situation in the city hasn't been this good in quite a while. The New York Knicks are the reigning NBA champion, the New York Yankees are once again about to clinch a postseason spot, and somehow, both NFL teams — the Giants and Jets — are looking good following Week 1 of the newly-minted 2026 season.

With the Giants opening up the season with a 28-20 win on Sunday over their division rival Dallas Cowboys, they joined the Jets in teams who claimed a win in Week 1. The Jets, despite opening the season on the road against the Tennessee Titans, earned a 23-10 victory.

In so doing, this marked the first time since 2009 where both New York-based NFL teams opened the season with a 1-0 record, as per Sarah Langs of MLB.com.

Just to further drum up hype for New York sports fans, back in 2009, it was the Yankees that won the World Series title. Perhaps the Giants and Jets' season-opening victories would also prove to be a good omen for the team in pinstripes moving forward.

For the Giants, quarterback Jaxson Dart was quite good on Sunday. He completed 23 of his 29 passes, three of which scored a touchdown for the team, and his completed passes totaled 230 yards. He outdueled Cowboys QB Dak Prescott, who went 22-34 for 175 yards.

Meanwhile, the Jets, with new yet familiar QB Geno Smith now at the controls, executed well in Week 1 against the Titans. Smith went 19-24, and while he didn't record a passing touchdown, he led efficient drives for New York — setting up the team to hit paydirt.

The Giants last won their first game of the new season back in 2022, a season which they finished with a 9-7-1 record, which was good enough to earn them a spot in the postseason. Meanwhile, the Jets haven't had a winning season since 2015, so they will take every season-opening victory they can get.
