The Tampa Bay Rays pulled off a stunning comeback against the Milwaukee Brewers in Game 4 of the World Series at Tropicana Field on Tuesday. The Rays beat the Brewers, 4-3, in 12 innings to stave off elimination in the best-of-seven series.
Ben Williamson was the hero for Tampa Bay, hitting a walk-off single with the bases loaded to drive in Nick Fortes for the wild victory.
In the postgame interview, Williamson, who came in as a pinch-hitter, touted the Rays' resolve and credited his teammates.
“Just being ready for the situation. These guys got us in the game, kept us in the game, and to come through, that spot feels good,” said Williamson.
“It just shows the resiliency of this group. We continue to fight, and that's been the motto of this series and this whole season. Just fight.”
The odds are stacked against the Rays, as no team has ever come back from a 3-0 deficit in the World Series. Only the Boston Red Sox have overcome the said hole in a seven-game series in league history.
The 25-year-old Williamson delivered Tampa Bay's first walk-off hit in the playoffs since Brett Philips did it in Game 4 of the World Series in 2020 against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
According to MLB.com's Sarah Langs, it was also the first walk-off win while facing elimination in the Fall Classic since David Freese's home run for the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 6 of the World Series in 2011 against the Texas Rangers.
The Rays will try to stay alive in Game 5 at Tropicana Field on Wednesday.
