On Monday night, the Denver Broncos will face off against the Kansas City Chiefs. Former Texas Tech and current Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes will be returning from injury in Week 1.

In the contest between the Broncos and Chiefs, Patrick Mahomes and his former Texas Tech teammate will both be reaching milestones, per Adam Schefter of ESPN.

“Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes and Broncos OC Davis Webb both played QB at Texas Tech from 2014-2015. Tonight, Mahomes returns from a torn ACL suffered nine months to the day, and Webb calls plays in an NFL regular-season game for the first time,” Schefter posted on X, formerly Twitter.

Mahomes played three easons at Texas Tech. He was a freshman in 2014, seeing action in seven games, before becoming the starter in 2015. He would start 29 games overall, passing for 11,252 yards and 93 touchdowns, while running for 820 yards and 22 scores in his college career. Mahomes won the Sammy Baugh Trophy, was a second-team All-Big 12 selection, and has the record for most passing yards in a college game. Mahomes would go on to be drafted tenth overall by the Chiefs.

In his freshman year, Mahomes began the season as a backup. The starting quarterback that year was Davis Webb. Webb was a four-star prospect who joined Texas Tech in 2013. Webb became just the second true freshman to start a game for Texas Tech, while splitting time with fellow freshman Baker Mayfield. After Mayfield transferred, Webb became the undisputed starter for the 2014 season. He started the first eight games of the year until an injury ended his season, and true freshman Mahomes got to make starts. Mahomes took the starting job in 2015, as Webb played in just five games. This led to Webb transferring and playing his final year at Cal.

He would go on to be selected in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft by the New York Giants, and spent time with the New York Jets and Buffalo Bills in his NFL career. From 2017 through 2022, he played in just two games, with one start. That came in 2022 in his second stint with the Giants. Since then, he has been with the Denver Broncos as a coach.

Webb was promoted to offensive coordinator this year and given play-calling duties. He gets his first chance to show his skills on Monday night.
