Tyrell Malacia warms up on the sideline

Tyrell Malacia has a new club after leaving Manchester United in the summer with FC Cincinnati snapping him up.

The Dutchman was released by the Red Devils after joining the club from Feyenoord in 2022.

The left-back has signed a one-year deal with the MLS side after going on trial with the club last week.

Speaking to the club's website about the deal, General Manager Chris Albright said: “We are excited to add a player of Tyrell's experience.

“He's played at the highest levels of the game and knows the demands of competing at that level.

"His quality on the ball, defensive instincts, and desire to win will add to this group and we're happy to welcome him to Cincinnati.”

Lifeline

Malacia arrived at United for around £15million, and he was seen as the eventual replacement for Luke Shaw.

He played an important role for the Red Devils as they made it to the quarter-finals of the Europa League, starting the majority of the games.

In the Premier League, he rotated with Shaw and ended the season having made 39 of the 50 total appearances he managed for Manchester United.

During that season, he also headed to Qatar with the Netherlands squad for the 2022 World Cup.

But the year ended horribly and began an awful period for the defender.

He suffered a knee injury that required surgery ensuring that he didn't play at all during the 2023/24 campaign.

The following year saw him return from injury only to be loaned out to PSV Eindhoven in the second half of the season.

During that season, Malacia publicly spoke about his injury hell.

He said: “We spoke to the guy who did my [first knee] surgery and then we made the decision: we had to do something else. I had to start my rehab over, basically… I had one day to be disappointed.

"Then I had to be like, ‘OK, we go again’. I think at the end of the day, everything I did, even if it was a mistake or something, I won’t even see it as a mistake because it’s a lesson.

"I think everything in life is already written for me. I had to go through this whole process to be where I’m at now, so I wouldn’t do anything different."

In the 2025/26 campaign, Malacia managed just 15 minutes for United's first team.

But having now secured a move to Cincinnati, Malacia will hope he can get his career back on track.
