The Florida football team picked up a SEC conference win over Auburn on Saturday night. It was the first conference win for new Gators head coach Jon Sumrall. Sumrall met up with another famous head football coach after the game.
âÂÂJon Sumrall celebrates his first SEC win with his family and Jon Gruden,â WSFA-TV reported on X, formerly Twitter.
Florida defeated Auburn, 44-39. The Gators are now 3-0 on the season under Sumrall. He is in his first year with the Gators, after previously coaching at Tulane.
âÂÂI knew we were going to run the ball on them; I knew we were going to throw the ball on them,â Sumrall said postgame Saturday, per the school. âÂÂThey're good up there, but I felt like we were better. I felt like the matchup leaned our way.âÂÂ
Florida finished the game with 495 total yards. The Gators were well-balanced offensively; the team had 252 passing yards and 243 rushing yards.
The Gators however did have 16 penalties in the contest.
âÂÂNo bad wins,â Sumrall said. âÂÂWe still have a lot to improve upon. That's not our best football. We're going to get there.âÂÂ
This was Florida's first win at Auburn since 1999. Gators fans will certainly celebrate this win, like Gruden. Gruden was a guest at the 2026 Gators Coaching Clinic. He and Sumrall have a long-established connection.
âÂÂThere have been a lot of great things that have happened here. I'm not talking about good years, I'm talking about great ones,â Gruden said earlier this year, per the school. âÂÂEverybody is bitching about college football and the direction it's headed, but Indiana figured it out. So, I just think it's really cool what's happening here now. We need to get Florida back to where it was, and I think Jon Sumrall is the kind of coach that can wake up this giant.âÂÂ
The Gators don't have much time to celebrate. Florida next plays an undefeated Ole Miss team on Saturday.
