In November 2025, Jon Sumrall was one of the hottest names on the coaching market. His Tulane squad had just finished the regular season at 10-2 and was a conference championship game away from likely heading to the College Football Playoff. It also looked like Sumrall would be heading to be the next head coach at Auburn. Auburn was unable to close the deal with Sumrall. They ended up with Alex Golesh. Meanwhile, the former Tulane coach was off to Florida.

Now, Florida and Sumrall are set to visit Auburn. Sumrall has roots with the Auburn program. His wife, Ginny, went to Auburn. He grew up in Alabama, and many of his family are Auburn fans, but this week, none of them should be rooting for the Tigers, according to remarks from the coach, per Chris McVeigh of On3.

“If I do, they’re no family to me,” Sumrall said. “Florida pays my mortgage. Any family that’s pulling against us ain’t my family.”

Florida is doing a little bit more than just paying his mortgage. He signed a six-year deal with the school, totalling up to just under $45 million.

Meanwhile, there will not be a lot of Gator fans in attendance on Saturday, as the game is set for a 7 pm kickoff at Jordan-Hare. Both teams are off to 2-0 starts. Florida has dispatched FAU and Campbell, winning a combined 118 to 24. Meanwhile, Auburn escaped Week 1 with a win over Baylor, before returning home to defeat Southern Miss 43-8.

Golesh and Sumrall have a history against each other. Both were coaching in the American the last two seasons, and while the two did not face off in 2025, they did in 2024. Sumrall and Tulane took a 45-10 victory over South Florida and Golesh in 2024. Now, they get to face off for the first time in the SEC.
