MLB free agency is right around the corner (November 2) now that the World Series is concluded. On Friday, the Athletics made an official decision regarding former New York Mets star Jeff McNeil, deciding his offseason fate.

Reports indicate that the Athletics opted to decline the club option for the 34-year-old infielder. Left-handed pitcher Jeffrey Springs was given the same news in the update from the A's Communications.

“The A's have declined the club options on infielder Jeff McNeil and left-handed pitcher Jeffrey Springs for the 2027 season,” A's Communications posted on X.

McNeil's tenure with the Athletics ends after just one season. He finished the 2026 campaign with 126 hits, nine home runs, and 59 RBIs through 478 at-bats, giving him a .264 batting average and .313 OBP. The nine-year veteran played 104 games at second base for the Athletics, but also made appearances at first base, third base, designated hitter, and all three positions in the outfield.

The ex-Mets star's future is currently unclear, as he'll have to navigate free agency. As for the Athletics, the front office may be in the market for a new second baseman. As of now, Zack Gelof, who mainly played third base and appeared in 19 games at second, would be the likely replacement for McNeil. But with free agency coming up, the franchise should have an opportunity to land new talent for 2027.

The Athletics finished this last season with a disappointing 64-98 record. The organization is not due to move to Las Vegas, Nevada, until 2028. So, we may see an aggressive front office attempting to open a championship window within the next two years.
