That’s right: The Marlins ace picked up his first career save in Wednesday’s 4-3 win over the D-backs at Chase Field. MLB’s leader in innings pitched this season with 206, Alcantara made his first relief appearance since pitching for the Cardinals during his 2017 debut campaign.

Alcantara induced deep flyouts from Arizona’s Pavin Smith and Tim Tawa before walking Lars Nootbaar with two outs. But pinch-runner Jordan Lawlar was caught stealing, handing Alcantara the first save of his nine-year career.

Alcantara, the 2022 National League Cy Young Award winner, has been a dependable member of Miami’s rotation all season, making 32 starts with a 3.86 ERA. He made his most recent start on Monday, allowing four runs in five innings, before emerging from the bullpen to close things out on Wednesday.
