Wonderkid JJ Gabriel wants to leave Manchester United - but what road will he go down? Will he flop or will he thrive?
Man United's academy is famed for its stories, with multiple club icons coming through the ranks to achieve greatness.
Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, David Beckham, Gary Neville, Mark Hughes, Nicky Butt and many more rose to the top at United.
In more recent years, Marcus Rashford is a prime example of a teenage sensation-turned-senior star, despite his blip.
It has always been part of the Red Devils' DNA - seeing homegrown talent burst into the first team and thrive at Old Trafford.
But rather than going down the route of some of the club's legends, Gabriel has forced their hand, and they may now end up losing one of the world's highest-rated young prospects.
It was revealed on Tuesday that the 15-year-old wanted to leave and have his registration with the academy cancelled.
He has Real Madrid, Barcelona, Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester City and Bayern Munich among the huge teams interested.
However, as much as Man United have seen success come from their academy, history shows that not all wonderkids shine.
So what will it be for Gabriel?
Well, his incredible stats and performances for United's youth teams, including a debut hat-trick in the UEFA Youth League last week, hint that he really is destined for greatness.
But high potential at a young age doesn't always lead to bigger things, as these few players know all too well...
Man United's wonderkids who struggled
Febian Brandy
After joining Man United at the age of nine, Febian Brandy went on to become one of the highest-rated youngsters in England.
Brandy, a forward, was looked at by Real Madrid and Barcelona - just like Gabriel - as he starred in competitions like the FA Youth Cup and Champions Youth Cup in 2007.
But he never played a senior game for United and would end up leaving the club in 2010, beginning a journeyman career.
Injuries hampered his progress and he ended up playing for 16 clubs, retiring from football after a few years in non-league.
His most appearances for a team after departing Old Trafford were 34 games for Walsall in the 2012/13 campaign.
Ravel Morrison
A name that a large majority of fans will relate to the failed wonderkid tag is Ravel Morrison, who Sir Alex Ferguson once labelled 'the best he had ever seen'.
Signing for Man United in 2009 as a scholar, Morrison looked destined for the top and Ferguson clearly thought so.
However, that sadly wasn't the case, as troubles off the pitch and a lack of discipline meant he didn't live up to his potential.
He left Man United in 2012 and has since played for 14 clubs, including stints at West Ham, Lazio, Derby and DC United.
Morrison is a prime example of 'what could've been'.
Federico Macheda
In April 2009, 17-year-old Federico Macheda announced himself at Old Trafford, scoring an iconic debut goal against Aston Villa.
His last-minute turn, strike and celebration are famous - but sadly for him, that has remained his career highlight ever since, as he only scored another three goals for the club altogether.
After spending seven years at Man United in the academy and first-team, he left in 2014 following six separate loan spells.
Macheda joined Cardiff City and then also played for Nottingham Forest, Italian side Novara and Greek giants Panathinaikos, where he did find some success, playing over 100 games.
At 35-years-old, he is still playing in Greece with Asteras Aktor.
Mads Timm
At the turn of the century, a highly rated Mads Timm joined Man United's academy and went on to sign a professional deal.
Striker Timm won the FA Youth Cup with the academy and made his first-team debut in the Champions League in 2002, but that ended up being his only senior appearance.
The Danish youth international was sent on two loan spells in Norway before joining Walsall and playing 12 games in 2006.
However, that move came before Timm received a 12-month sentence in a young offenders institute for reckless driving following an incident with a teammate which ended in a crash.
That ended his career at United as he was released, but he was given a second chance in Denmark before retiring aged just 24.
Isak Hansen-Aaroen
A more recent addition to this list is Isak Hansen-Aaroen, who was once considered a wonderkid at Man United.
Hansen-Aaroen joined the Red Devils' academy in 2020 aged 16, arriving as a very highly rated talent from Tromso.
He went on to play 30 games for the U18s and 50 games for the U21s, but he never made it into the first team, which angered him.
The young midfielder, who departed in 2024 to join Werder Bremen in search of senior football, admitted that he 'felt ready' for the men's game, and he wasn't happy with the lack of openings, which appears to be a similar stance to Gabriel's.
Hansen-Aaroen only played four first-team games for Werder Bremen though, recently leaving to join Dutch side NEC.
Man United's wonderkid who left and became stars
Paul Pogba
Now, moving on to the success stories of some Man United wonderkids, who Gabriel will hope to follow the path of, rather than those who haven't gone on to better things.
Paul Pogba became a superstar after leaving the Red Devils as a teenager amid frustration over first-team opportunities.
Aged 19, following talks with multiple clubs in the final year of his deal, he signed on a free for Juventus - and the rest is history.
The Frenchman won four straight Serie A titles and two Italian Cups, becoming one of the world's best midfielders.
United, of course, then ended up re-signing the man they let go for free for a world-record fee of ã89million in 2016, two years before he went on to win the World Cup with France.
Gerard Pique
Barcelona icon Gerard Pique joined Man United's academy as a highly-rated defender aged 17 in 2004 and ended up playing 23 games for the club.
But he had to compete with Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand for a regular spot, leading to his departure just four years later.
He signed for Barca again in 2008 and became a club legend, winning a whopping 30 titles over the next 14 years.
Pique won three Champions Leagues and nine La Liga titles, becoming known as one of the world's best defenders.
The Spaniard also won the World Cup in 2010, with him going on to retire in 2023 as Barca's fifth-highest ever appearance maker.
Alvaro Carreras
At 17, defender Alvaro Carreras joined Man United from Real Madrid with the 'wonderkid' tag already on his back.
Carreras went on to spend two years in the Red Devils' academy, featuring regularly in the UEFA Youth League and FA Youth Cup.
But he never broke into the first team and failed to make a senior appearance before being sold to Benfica in 2024 following multiple loan spells, which included a year with Preston North End.
From there though, he has gone from strength to strength, with the Spaniard re-joining Real Madrid last summer.
He has since played 45 times for Real, becoming a regular starter and scoring under Jose Mourinho already this season.
