In the wake of the controversy surrounding Macklemore's exit from Ed Sheeran's Loop Tour, the “Shape of You” singer has issued a statement.

Sheeran broke his silence in a statement posted on Instagram. He wanted the clear the air, captioning the post, “It's important that I set out some facts.”

First, he conceded that he is “appalled by the conflict between Israel and Palestine,” noting, “The suffering and pain caused on both sides is a human tragedy. There are too many wars across the world causing immeasurable pain, none of which should be tolerated.”

He talked about the origins of Macklemore joining his tour, which was agreed to last year “because I respect him as an artist.” Sheeran always lets his openers “play a setlist of their choosing,” but he received calls from venues that his upcoming tour dates with Macklemore supporting him would be pulled if he was kept on the marquee. Among those he spoke to was Robert Kraft, the owner of the New England Patriots. Sheeran is set to perform two shows at Kraft's Gillette Stadium on Sep. 25 and 26.

“I was informed that this stance was based on how Macklemore conveyed part of his message during his performance, rather than on everything that was said,” Sheeran explained. “I spoke with the venues at length all week to try and build a bridge. One of those people was Robert Kraft. I was also involved in direct talks with promoters along with activists on both sides to try and find a mutual resolution for all, but the venue's and promoter's decision was final.”

Sheeran clarified that it wasn't his decision to fire Macklemore from the tour. His contract for the tour was made with the promoter rather than him.

“I would never let down the fans who had made plans, nor would I abandon the touring crew and the other support acts and musicians who rely on me for work and to make a living,” he said.

He uses his music to unite people, and he assured fans that “won't ever change.” Sheeran also clarified that he isn't “complicit,” as he does have “views on this devastating conflict.” He chooses not to speak about them publicly, but that doesn't mean he doesn't have them.

“I have my personal views on this devastating conflict,” he said. “Just because I choose not to speak publicly, it doesn't mean I don't have them, and it doesn't mean I don't care. Nor does it mean I don't support causes in my own, personal way.”

Sheeran is aware that families (including young children) don't come to his shows for a “political forum.” He respects Macklemore's “strength of purpose to stand up and shout for what he believes.” However, he also noted that “there is room for multiple approaches to the same end: peace.”

He wants to use his fame and platform to “be a place of safety and sanctuary, to maintain diplomacy, and keep conversations open, not closed.”

“I have spent this week trying to build bridges, to find a solution and unforuntately, was unable to do so. I know who I am, both as a person and as an artist, and those who know my heart know my values too,” he concluded.
