The rich keep getting richer. The Duke Blue Devils already had a solid initial class of recruits for 2027, but they strengthened that group with the commitment of five-star forward Asa Montgomery this week, as per Joe Tipton of On3.
Asa Montgomery had drawn interest from plenty of other top power conference programs, but ultimately gave his commitment to Duke, giving the Blue Devils and head coach Jon Scheyer the team’s third recruit from the class of 2027. He joins Kager Knueppel, the younger brother of former Duke star Kon Knueppel, and Luke Paul from the NBL’s Next Stars program as the incoming freshman class for next season so far.
Montgomery is considered a top-three forward in the class of 2027, and he will finish up his senior year of high school this season at Hillgrove High School. He will join the Blue Devils for the 2027-28 season. The 6 feet 7 inch forward has a versatile skill set, and projects to be a solid wing at the next level.
His commitment comes on the heels of Scheyer and Duke bringing in the No. 1 recruiting class for this upcoming season. The Blue Devils have a talented and intriguing group of freshmen, including Joaquim Boumtje-Boumtje, Cameron Williams, Deron Rippey Jr., Bryson Howard and Maxime Meyer.

The program is entering year five under Scheyer, and is expected to be on the short list of teams vying for a national championship. Duke reached the Final Four last season only to be defeated in heartbreaking fashion as UConn guard Braylon Mullins buried a game-winning deep 3-point shot.
