In the days before the 2026 regular season began, a report indicated that Dianna Russini “absolutely” plans to return to sports media, with her next move coming “sooner than later.”
More than five weeks later, nothing has happened.
Enter the New York Post, which published the first set of photos that turned the NFL offseason upside down. Via Lucas Widman of the Post, Russini has hired crisis publicist Melissa Nathan in order “to navigate past the Mike Vrabel scandal.”
Widman also explains that the move comes as Russini “prepares to return to work,” and that Russini believes she needs “some outside help to revamp her career.”
The report, coupled with the reporting from early September, suggests that Russini had a job offer in hand but that she’s not yet ready to resurface. It’s also possible, frankly, that there is no viable offer to date and that Nathan’s efforts will be aimed at helping find one.
Either way, there was a clear sense as of September 3 that Russini would be back in the fray in a matter of weeks, if not days. Maybe she’s hoping to get a better offer than the best one she has. Or maybe, just maybe, there has yet to be an offer that she deems to be acceptable.
That would be a surprise. Although the damage to her credibility (both from her reaction to the Vrabel scandal and the bizarre story about calling a coach on FaceTime to get out of a ticket for texting while driving, which apparently was not true) will make it very difficult to return to reporting, she could launch a podcast, somewhere. And the first episode — in which she’d reportedly tell her story about the Vrabel situation — would do very well. The question will be whether and to what extent the audience can be sustained beyond the first episode.
Whatever the context or the platform, Russini’s biggest challenge will be to get people to believe what she says. And that will hinge in large part on what she says and how she says it the next time she talks about Vrabel.
