Jack Hughes said the New Jersey Devils needed to come in hungry after missing the playoffs last season, and on Tuesday night in Detroit, he set that tone himself when it mattered most. Hughes scored on a breakaway 1:19 into overtime to lift the Devils to a 5-4 win over the Detroit Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena.

Jesper Bratt sprung him with a slick pass through the middle, and Hughes raced in alone on John Gibson before beating the veteran goaltender to end a back-and-forth affair.

The game-winner capped a three-point night for Hughes, who also picked up assists on goals by Nico Hischier and Bratt in the second period. The win pulled New Jersey back to .500 at 3-3-0.

The Devils came out flying and outshot the Red Wings 16-0 midway through the first period. Evan Rodrigues gave them the lead, but Detroit answered on just its third shot of the night when Emmitt Finnie ripped a shot from the left dot with 1:25 left in the frame.

Michael Brandsegg-Nygard put the Red Wings in front 1:43 into the second period, finishing a 2-on-1 rush. What followed was a seesaw battle. Anthony Mantha tied it, and Hischier scored on the power play to put New Jersey ahead 3-2. Alex DeBrincat evened it from the high slot at 15:10, but Bratt restored the lead less than two minutes later.

DeBrincat struck again at 5:46 of the third, one-timing a feed from Moritz Seider to force a 4-4 tie. Gibson kept it there late in regulation, kicking out a stop on Arseny Gritsyuk’s odd-man rush to send the game to overtime.

That set the stage for Hughes, who needed just 79 seconds of 3-on-3 play to finish it.
