Connor Hellebuyck has fit like a glove with his new team, backstopping the New Jersey Devils to victories in each of his first three starts, the most recent a 4-3 shootout triumph over Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday night.

In the process, the American joined a franchise list that features only three other goaltenders.

“Hellebuyck became the fourth goaltender in Devils franchise history to win each of his first three appearances with the team, following John Vanbiesbrouck (4 GP in 2000-01), Jonathan Bernier (3 GP in 2021-22) and Al Smith (3 GP in 1980-81),” per NHL Public Relations.

The 33-year-old beat the Dallas Stars (5-1) in his team debut on Oct. 27, prevailed over the Vegas Golden Knights (5-2) on Oct. 30 and downed the Oilers in a shootout Tuesday.

The Devils have won five straight home games, and Hellebuyck's acquisition seems to have lit a fire under the club. They've won eight of their last 10 games overall, improving to 10-5-0 and second place in the Metropolitan Division.

“It was two really good hockey teams going at it and playing a little bit of chess at times and really laying it on the line,” Hellebuyck said of Tuesday's triumph. “I thought the guys played really good in front of me. I mean, the second period, I think they only got (three) shots so that's almost textbook.”

Hellebuyck's first two victories were on the road in Texas and Las Vegas; this was his first win in front of the home crowd at the Prudential Center in Newark. He ended up with 18 saves.

With Jake Allen settling in as the backup goaltender, Hellebuyck figures to see the lion's share of starts as the Devils look to return to the Stanley Cup Playoffs after failing to qualify in 2025-26.

Having given up only six goals in his three starts, it looks as though he's quickly turned the page after a trying campaign with the Winnipeg Jets that saw him go 23-23-11 with a 2.86 goals-against average and a .895 save percentage.

He will likely be back between the pipes when the Devils host the St. Louis Blues on Thursday night.
