While soccer legend Lionel Messi is set to play his retirement game, Cristiano Ronaldo has more left to give. Ronaldo, 41, has now been named in Portugal's squad by manager Jorge Jesus.

The Al-Nassr star is part of the first 25-man squad for the defending champions' upcoming four Nations League matches. Earlier this year, after the conclusion of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Ronaldo fueled speculation about his retirement plans.

Ronaldo, a five-time Ballon d'Or winner, is arguably one of the most celebrated soccer players of all time. With club trophies all across Europe, Ronaldo is also a one-time Euro and two-time UEFA Nations League winner.

Following a disappointing 2026 FIFA World Cup tournament, Ronaldo confirmed that the 2026 World Cup would be his last, although he was not ready to make any hasty call on his playing career.

Ronaldo was last seen representing Portugal during their R16 match against Spain in the 2026 World Cup. He is now part of the Nations League 25-man squad for Portugal's four games between Sept. 24 and Oct. 4, 2026.

Portugal's new manager, Jorge Jesus, included Ronaldo and recently explained his decision. “His performance is what matters. The past doesn't count,” Jesus told a press conference on Friday, Sept. 18, 2026. “In this squad, there are ​13 players who have worked with me. I don't have a set core, so ​within this group, there were several players who were important for this squad.

“Cris [Cristiano Ronaldo] is a player like ‌any other. ⁠If he performs, he plays; if not, he doesn't. He has a different status – he has five Ballon d'Or awards – but does that factor into my decisions? No. However, the fact that he is different is.” (Quotes obtained via Reuters)
