The Dallas Cowboys’ revamped defense has already pushed Skip Bayless to his breaking point. With Dallas struggling early in the 2026 NFL season, the outspoken Cowboys supporter directed his frustration toward defensive coordinator Christian Parker and the unit’s early growing pains.
“I'm having very unchristian thoughts about Christian Parker's defense,” Bayless said. “I'm thinking things in my mind I don't want to say publicly… unchristian things!”
The blunt assessment captures the mounting frustration surrounding a defense that entered the season with significantly higher expectations.
Dallas aggressively rebuilt its defensive personnel during the offseason. The Cowboys added established talent including Quinnen Williams, Kenny Clark, and Rashan Gary while also bringing in Caleb Downs. Yet, Parker’s new 3-4 scheme has struggled to consistently produce the communication and run-defense stability the Cowboys expected. Blown coverages and missed run fits have repeatedly put additional pressure on Dak Prescott and the offense.
The Cowboys now face an immediate test against Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens in Sunday’s international matchup in Rio de Janeiro. It will be a difficult assignment against Baltimore’s rushing attack. This could provide an early indication of whether Parker can correct the defensive issues before they become a season-long problem.
Dallas opened 2026 with a 28–20 loss to the New York Giants. It exposed both interior protection concerns and defensive communication issues. Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, and George Pickens remain central to the offense. However, the Cowboys’ ability to contend will depend heavily on whether their revamped defense can find its identity. For Parker, the Ravens matchup arrives with scrutiny already intensifying—and Bayless is clearly watching closely.
