Not much has gone according to plan when it comes to the Dallas Cowboys' backfield so far this season. Before the season began, Jaydon Blue became arguably the most surprising cut league-wide, which led to the 2025 fifth-rounder signing with the Philadelphia Eagles. Malik Davis took his spot as Javonte Williams' backup, but he was just placed on injured reserve due to a hip injury. Even Williams had a controversial Week 1 performance, as his taunting penalty on a touchdown directly resulted in a missed extra point in crunch time by Brandon Aubrey.

All of the chaos at running back forced the team to make a few moves at the position ahead of Week 2. The Cowboys signed Tyler Goodson off of the Atlanta Falcons practice squad. They also waived Israel Abaninkanda. Both moves were reported by Adam Schefter.

Goodson had played with the Green Bay Packers and Indianapolis Colts prior to joining the Falcons. He went undrafted in 2022 after playing college ball at Iowa. Goodson has 264 yards and one touchdown on 54 career carries. Abaninkanda was originally one of the team's final roster cuts on cut-down day, but he signed with the practice squad and was then elevated to the active roster to replace Davis. It is possible that he will go back to Dallas' practice squad.

The Cowboys' MO was always going to be their aerial attack. Dak Prescott is one of the best statistical producers in the passing game on a year-to-year basis, and CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens form arguably the best pass-catching duo in the NFL. Even so, the Cowboys' offense needs balance, and the shuffling/injuries/problems at running back have prevented the team from finding that.
