The Dallas Cowboys are set to take on the New York Giants in Week 1. After a busy offseason addressing the defense, Jerry Jones is expecting big things from his team. Especially from rookie first-round pick Caleb Downs, whom Jones is overwhelmingly confident about.

Before the primetime “Sunday Night Football” matchup kicks off, the 83-year-old owner and general manager claimed he believes Downs will pick things up quickly, according to Joseph Hoyt of the Dallas News. Jones claims that the 21-year-old will step right into his debut game without experiencing any first-game nerves.

“It won't be too big for him,” Jones said about Downs. “He's got his head on straight. He'll be able to come out and compete without worrying about first-time jitters in the NFL. We're really proud to have him.”

The Cowboys used the No. 11 overall pick on the former Ohio State Buckeye star. He's beginning his career playing the nickel cornerback role. Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer believes putting Downs in that position will help develop his game quickly as a key defender in the secondary.

Caleb Downs played three years of college football. He played for the Alabama Crimson Tide as a true freshman before transferring to Ohio State to play for Ryan Day. He played 44 total games during his time in college, recording 257 combined tackles (164 solo), 1.5 sacks, six interceptions, three forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery.

Downs was one of several key additions Jerry Jones made this offseason to the Cowboys' defense. Dallas also added linebackers/pass rushers Rashan Gary and Von Miller, giving the exterior defensive line plenty of experience with star-level talent and depth. Jaishawn Barham and Malachi Lawrence are fellow rookies who are providing solid depth in the linebacker roles. Both have great long-term potential.

Look for Caleb Downs to potentially make an immediate impact in the NFL. After being a stud in college, he has a real chance at becoming a stud for the Cowboys.
