The season opener for the Dallas Cowboys did not go exactly as planned, as they bowed to the New York Giants, 28-20, at MetLife Stadium.

The Cowboys had no answer for Jaxson Dart, who finished with 23-of-29 for 230 yards, three touchdowns, and zero interceptions. Giants coach John Harbaugh notched his first win with his new squad.

The Cowboys shot themselves in the foot with nine penalties, which cost them 90 yards. The most costly one was the taunting call on Javonte Williams after scoring a touchdown with 5:21 left in the fourth quarter. It led to Brandon Aubrey missing the extra point from a farther distance.

Dallas coach Brian Schottenheimer summed up their performance with a four-word remark.

“They shoved us around,” said Schottenheimer, as quoted by the Dallas Morning News' Calvin Watkins.

Watkins added that Schottenheimer was going for the two-point conversion, but Williams' penalty forced them to go with Aubrey's kick from a farther distance.

Dak Prescott had a solid showing, throwing 22-of-34 for 175 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. The defense, however, did not hold its end of the bargain, allowing close to 30 points to the Giants. The Cowboys allowed an average of 30.1 points last season, the worst in the NFL.

New York had 394 yards, including 229 yards from its passing attack.
