It’s a weird matchup as the Washington Commanders roll along with apparently clueless head coach Dan Quinn. Meanwhile, the San Francisco 49ers are basking in the glow of Brock Purdy’s great start. These teams meet in Week 6 on Monday Night Football, and here are odds, predictions, and a pick for the contest.
The 49ers enter the game with a record of 5-0. And that record is no fluke. They have shown to be a very good football team. On the other side of things, the Commanders are struggling with a record of 1-3-1. The tie was courtesy of Quinn, who couldn’t devise a plan to spike the ball and kick a potential game-winning field goal against the Giants on Sunday.
Commanders vs. 49ers Odds
Commanders: +7.5
49ers: -7.5
Over: 50.5
Under: 50.5
The spread is tempting to grab the Commanders. It’s not a bad idea to consider their total embarrassment from their meltdown against the Giants. They could bounce back and throw a real scare into the 49ers. It’s even possible that they could pull off the upset. The 49ers’ injuries and Dre Greenlaw suspension open the door for a surprise outcome.
The over-under line is much less enticing. This game could blow out and go way over that value. But it’s also a fairly good possibility that conservative play calling will keep the point total down.
Commanders vs. 49ers key injuries
It’s a tough time of the year for NFL teams as the injuries mount up. Included in the mix for the 49ers is edge rusher Nick Bosa. He has a chance to be back on the field against the Commanders, according to ninerswire.com.
“We know he's got a chance,” 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said. “I think him, Kyle Juszczyk, and James Thompson are all kinda in the same boat. They've all got a chance, but definitely not saying they're good to go right now. We've gotta continue to evaluate them throughout the week. It'll take all week. But hopefully they can get there.”
Of course, the 49ers won’t have Deebo Samuel. He suffered a hamstring injury in the win over the Seahawks, according to NBC Sports via 49erswebzone.com.
“Got it pretty good, so he’s gonna miss some time,” Shanahan said.
As for the Commanders, they went without receiver Stefon Diggs last week. He is dealing with a hamstring injury and is questionable for the 49ers game. Having him team up with Terry McLaurin would make an important difference.
Also hurting for the Commanders are defensive end Charles Omenihu, safety Tyler Owens, and safety Nick Cross. All three players are listed as questionable.
Commanders vs. 49ers betting trends
The Commanders have peppered the Over this season. They have a 4-1 Over mark in five games. However, the 49ers answer with a 4-1 record against the spread. The Over is 3-2 for the 49ers this year.
In the head-to-head meetings, the 49ers are 5-3-1 in the last nine games. Also, notably, the Under is 6-3 over that same stretch.
Keys to Commanders vs. 49ers matchup
The Commanders desperately need to get off to a good start in this one. The game will be in front of a national audience, and the images of their Giants debacle will linger.
Quinn has said the team cannot let that game define the team in 2026, according to Commanders.com.
“I don't catastrophize things, but I do wanna make sure that I don't minimize things either,” Quinn said. “And there are plenty of things for us to improve upon in this game and not just the last play. And so, I wanna make sure I'm always emphasizing that to the team about what we're capable of. What we need to work on. But by no small margin, it was the execution, man.
Article Continues Below“And that's what I want us as players and coaches to absolutely drill down, nail it, because when you have this, it gives a bad taste in your mouth. And you wanna, like in our team meeting today, we laid out the plan of how to go play our best at San Francisco. I do wanna make sure I'm expressing what we're teaching, but at the same time, also point to what we need to get done.”
If the Commanders fall behind early, they’ll like be toast. It’s a quick trip to 1-4-1 from there.
As for the 49ers, they need simply to do their thing. They have been good on defense when they've needed it. And their offense has been very impressive. One key area for them is to establish the ground attack early. The Commanders have been good against the run this season, so that could be a challenge. If they become one-dimensional, that opens the door for an upset.
Commanders vs. 49ers prediction and pick
The 49ers should make their share of splash plays. It could turn into a rout. However, let’s give Jayden Daniels enough credit to bounce back from his absent-minded final seconds last week. He will make plays with his legs and his arm.
It’s the perfect setup for this game to come down to a late-game decision by Quinn. The Commanders score on the last play of regulation. Quinn decides to go for a 2-point conversion and the win. Daniels takes the snap and …. Chris Paul steps on his foot again. Daniels fumbles, the 49ers recover, and Quinn hides his head in shame. Again. It’s who the Commanders are.
