The Washington Commanders could be without veteran running back Jeremy McNichols for an extended period after he suffered a concerning foot injury during Sunday's 27-10 win over the Philadelphia Eagles. Though the 30-year-old is still seeking additional medical opinions, his absence could stretch across multiple months, according to Tashan Reed of The Washington Post.
McNichols sustained the injury in the third quarter against the Eagles and limped off to the locker room. He did not return for the remainder of the contest. Head coach Dan Quinn addressed the situation in his Monday press conference, confirming that McNichols has a midfoot injury and expressing serious concerns about its severity.
“He does have a midfoot injury,” said Quinn. “I'm concerned it's serious. They're gonna do some more scans as we get through tomorrow. But it's enough that we're concerned today. I'll give you an update as it goes to Wednesday, but it's something that the team for sure is concerned with.”
The potential setback comes shortly after McNichols returned from injured reserve. A quadriceps injury had forced him to miss the first five games of the season, keeping him out for most of training camp and the entire preseason. He returned in Week 6 versus the San Francisco 49ers and had started working his way back into Washington's running back rotation.
Against Philadelphia, McNichols recorded five carries for 21 yards and caught one pass for seven yards before suffering the injury.
His potential extended absence creates another problem for the Commanders' backfield. Jacory Croskey-Merritt is already on injured reserve with a groin injury and must miss at least two more games. That leaves Rachaad White and Austin Ekeler as the only healthy running backs on the active roster.
Article Continues BelowWhite contributed 55 rushing yards on 11 attempts and a touchdown versus the Eagles, while Ekeler finished with 36 yards on eight carries and converted a two-point attempt.
Washington could turn to practice-squad running backs Craig Reynolds and Devin Neal or explore outside options to supplement the position.
With the Los Angeles Rams visiting in Week 9, the Commanders must contend with another blow to their backfield depth. Quinn is expected to provide another update Wednesday after McNichols undergoes further examinations.
