The Washington Commanders dropped a crucial divisional road game to the Philadelphia Eagles by a score of 24-22, which came as a huge letdown after a late touchdown scored by wide receiver Stefon Diggs. Heavily scrutinized quarterback Jayden Daniels found Diggs for a potential game-tying touchdown, but Diggs' celebration was flagged, erasing a chance to go for two points and tie the game at 17.

The play happened early in the fourth quarter after Daniels' 10-yard scoring strike with just under 10 minutes left on the clock, shortly after an injury to a key Commanders defender. The Commanders were forced to kick an extra point and remained down 17-16, eventually falling in Philadelphia.

Commanders coach Dan Quinn spoke about the penalty after the game, revealing his feelings on what he would have done if not for the 15-yard violation. He told Nicki Jhabvala of The Athletic that he would have gone for two points in an effort to tie the game if not for the flag. He also spoke to Diggs about what happened.

“Yeah, I did have a conversation with him about that,” Quinn said. “This is a real competitor. He knows better in that space, and he knows that.”

Diggs finished with four catches for 55 yards on the day, including the touchdown. He teamed with rookie third-round pick Antonio Williams (four catches for 64 yards and a touchdown) to aid his star quarterback Jayden Daniels, but it wasn't enough to pull out the victory.

Daniels looked a bit shakier than expected but still took care of the football with 164 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions, resembling his pre-injury self. He will need to adjust to life without star tackle Laremy Tunsil going forward after a pregame injury announcement.

On a day of letdowns for the Commanders, there is plenty to build on heading toward Week 2, but Quinn knows Diggs and his teammates will have to play smarter if they hope to contend for a Super Bowl this season.
