The Indianapolis Colts lost to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday Night Football. It was a contest that could have gone either way. But one decision from Indianapolis head coach Shane Steichen swung momentum in favor of the Chiefs.

The Colts had the ball on a fourth-and-eight from the Kansas City 15-yard line. With three minutes remaining, there was no guarantee the Chiefs would have scored. At the same time, had they scored a touchdown, the Colts would have won.

However, Steichen kicked the tying field goal. On the ensuing drive, the Chiefs marched down the field and won on a 40-yard field goal. The Colts head coach explained his decision following the game.

“I was trying to finish the game with (Jonathan Taylor) with the ball in his hands. Obviously, ran it on first down, ran it again on second down. We got a third and long, (Daniel Jones) scrambled… It was fourth-and-eight, had a play called, had to love the look to run it there. If not, we took the delay of game and kicked the field goal,” Steichen said, via local outlet WISH-TV.

This was certainly a better performance from the Colts in Week 2. However, they had the chance to win this game and elected to play it safe. How this loss affects the team moving forward will be intriguing to monitor.

The Colts go again for their first win of 2026 next week against the Houston Texans at home.
