It was a pretty perfect week of college football. Big games lived up to the hype, rivalries ended in upsets, and we found out a lot about the big contenders in college football.
Here are some of the biggest takeaways from Week 6.
Sark Does it Again
Aside from a perfect second half against Ohio State, has any offense in the country been more underwhelming than Texas? With all the transfers, the improved run game, and another year with Arch Manning, the Longhorn offense still looks pedestrian. Oklahoma’s offense is so terrible that you only had to play a clean game to win easily.
Instead, Arch had two boneheaded turnovers, including a pick-six; special teams gave up a blocked punt for a touchdown, and the defense couldn’t make a big stop. Texas is in danger during conference play, especially if they can’t get more than 3.8 yards per game on the ground.
Georgia Wins in Tuscaloosa
Going into this top-10 showdown, we didn’t really know what to expect out of Georgia since they hadn’t played a team with a pulse. Both teams looked like two of the best in the country, and despite some controversial 4th-quarter officiating, Georgia seemed like a well-deserving road warrior.
Gunner Stockton just plays such solid football and does enough to keep Georgia from losing. However, two things impressed me even more. Georgia exposed a Bama run defense that has been inconsistent at times, and Dwight Phillips Jr. took advantage, totaling 120 yards on the ground.
The most impressive thing of the night was Georgia's front seven. Keelon Russell was kept in check, sacked 4 times, and under constant pressure all night. I thought Georgia would need to turn this into a track meet to win on the road, but maybe Georgia's defense is good enough to win on its own this year.
It’s Californication
Everyone wanted to know who the next Curt Cignetti would be, and of course it would be his successor at JMU. UCLA didn’t play it cute on Saturday; they went to Eugene and out-physicalled Oregon. Dylan Raiola was completely shut down and had to get benched after getting swarmed all afternoon.
Outside of a season finale against rival USC, the schedule looks pretty light for the Bruins. At Minnesota, at Michigan, and at home against Wisconsin, none of those games are that intimidating. Is it crazy to think that anything less than 10 wins would be a shock? UCLA looks like they could be a playoff team right away in the Bob Chesney era.
Indiana Keeps on Surviving
It hasn’t been pretty, but Curt Cignetti’s Hoosiers just won’t roll over. They escaped Nebraska with a win, but their biggest test of the season awaits them back in Bloomington next week. Ohio State hasn’t looked as dominant as in years past, but they are still the by far best team on Indiana’s schedule. It’ll be interesting to see how these teams look this time next week, as the winner will likely control the top seed in the Big Ten.
