The Kansas City Chiefs have looked great during their comeback season in 2026. Kansas City is 5-2 headed into Week 9 despite finishing just 6-11 last season. Despite the solid turnaround, some national voices are skeptical that the Chiefs can become the greatest dynasty in NFL history.

Colin Cowherd was not shy when comparing the Chiefs' dynasty to the Patriots head of Week 9. He explained that the Patriots dynasty is more prolific than many fans remember.

“I spent around half of the dynasty surrounded by Patriots fans. What is remarkable about that dynasty [is] if you really look at the numbers, it's even greater than you remember,” Cowherd said on Thursday via The Herd with Colin Cowherd. “… 19 years, 17 division titles. They won 77% of their games in the National Football League. Conference championship game 13 times, Super Bowl appearances nine.”

By comparison, the Chiefs accomplished seven consecutive AFC Championship appearances from 2018-24. They turned those into five Super Bowl appearances and three Lombardi Trophies.

Cowherd argued that despite all of their strengths, the Chiefs are nowhere close to accomplishing what the Patriots did during the Brady era.

“The smartly owned, brilliantly coached, remarkably quarterbacked, excellent front officed Kansas City Chiefs. They're not halfway there yet and they're already flailing,” Cowherd added. “Until Kenneth Walker, they had no run game for Patrick Mahomes' entire career.”

Cowherd also cited Kansas City's recent spat of special teams woes as another huge difference between the two dynasties.

There's no question that the Chiefs were a dominant force in the modern NFL for several seasons. They are still a contending team that could get the dynasty right back on track during the postseason. Still, the Chiefs have not looked as invincible as the Patriots did during their prime years.

None of that puts a cap on what Kansas City can accomplish. But it does show that the Chiefs have a long way to go if they want to be remembered as the best franchise of all time.

Next up for the Chiefs is a Week 9 home game against the Jets.
