Sunday’s AFC West showdown in Denver carries real divisional weight, with the Kansas City Chiefs (5-1) holding a half-game lead over the Broncos (5-2).
Kansas City is coming off its first loss of the season, while Denver has won three straight and can move ahead of the Chiefs in the division with a victory. The teams met in the season opener on September 14 at Arrowhead Stadium. The Chiefs rolled to a 31-10 win, outgaining Denver 392 yards – 176 yards. Patrick Mahomes threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score, but the star of the night was offseason addition Kenneth Walker III who gashed Denver for 173 rushing yards and a touchdown on 23 carries.
The Chiefs arrive in Denver looking to rebound from their 20-3 loss at Seattle last weekend, a game in which they were simply outclassed as Mahomes and co. never found a rhythm. Kansas City managed only 213 total yards and 11 first downs and failed to reach the red zone, while Mahomes completed 19 of 33 passes for 165 yards with no touchdowns and an interception. Walker, facing his former team, was held to just 36 yards on 14 carries after entering the night averaging a league-leading 133 rushing yards per game. Seattle controlled the ball for nearly 36 minutes, converted 11 of 16 third downs and got 150 receiving yards and a touchdown from Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Even when Kansas City had chances to get back into the game, Harrison Butker missed field goals from 58 and 45 yards, leaving the Chiefs with only a third-quarter field goal.
Denver, meanwhile, enters with momentum after a 30-16 road win over Arizona. Bo Nix supplied the game’s biggest play with a career-long 62-yard touchdown run late in the second quarter and finished with 222 passing yards and 73 rushing yards, while RJ Harvey turned a screen pass into a 52-yard touchdown and J.K. Dobbins added a one-yard score. The Broncos’ defense repeatedly disrupted Jacoby Brissette and the Cardinals’ offense, producing 12 quarterback hits, six tackles for loss and three sacks.
Kansas City owns a 74-59 all-time advantage and dominated Denver with a 16-game winning streak from 2015 through 2023, including Mahomes winning his first 12 starts against the Broncos. Denver finally broke that run in 2023 and has since shown it can compete with KC, but the Chiefs reasserted themselves emphatically with September’s 31-10 victory. The winner Sunday takes the reigns in the AFC West as we move into the second half of the season.
Let’s dive into the numbers and see if we can’t find an additional sweat or two in this AFC West tilt.

Here are the best bets our model is projecting for Sunday’s game between the Chiefs vs. Broncos:
- Moneyline: NBC Sports is leaning towards a play on the Chiefs on the Moneyline.
- Spread: NBC Sports is staying away from a play on the Spread.
- Total: NBC Sports is recommending a play on the Total UNDER 40.5.
Here’s why the Total UNDER 40.5 is the best bet:
The strongest play on the board, and the market has been moving this direction all week. The total opened at 43.5 and has been bet down to 40.5 across the board — a full two-point drop — with BetRivers and HardRock dropping all the way to 40.0. Denver’s offense is the anchor. The Broncos rank 31st in yards per play (4.95), 31st in total yards (282.86 per game), 30th in passing yards (188.0 per game), 29th in completion percentage (59.17%), 27th in yards per pass attempt (5.83), 31st in third-down conversion rate (31.46%), and 25th in points scored (20.57 per game). They’ve run just 57.14 plays per game (30th) and they’re 32nd in fourth-down go-for-it rate (6.45%) — this is a team that punts and plays field position. Kansas City’s defense is built to keep it that way. The Chiefs rank 2nd in points allowed (17.17 per game), 2nd in touchdown percentage allowed (2.33%), 2nd in passing touchdowns allowed (0.83 per game), 4th in yards per play allowed (5.2), 4th in yards per carry allowed (3.57), and 5th in yards per pass attempt allowed (6.66). They’ve allowed just 9 touchdowns all season (2nd-fewest). The head-to-head history backs it hard: 7 of the last 10 meetings have gone Under, and the average combined score in that span is just 39.8 points — right at this line.
