The Kansas City Chiefs couldn't overcome the Denver Broncos in Sunday's Week 8 matchup, dropping a 28-24 decision as a late penalty involving right tackle Jaylon Moore undermined their chances of pulling off a comeback.
Kansas City entered the fourth quarter with a 24-13 advantage but surrendered its lead as Denver turned things around. With four seconds remaining, the Chiefs had one final opportunity to steal the win, facing fourth-and-goal at the Broncos' 1-yard line.
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes appeared to strike the final blow when he connected with wide receiver Rashee Rice for a touchdown. However, the celebration was short-lived after officials flagged Moore for a false start, resulting in a five-yard penalty that pushed Kansas City back to the 6-yard line.
The Chiefs subsequently faced fourth-and-6, and Denver took advantage of the situation. Defensive tackle Malcolm Roach brought down Mahomes for a loss of two yards, ending Kansas City's final possession and securing Denver's triumph.
Although the penalty became a talking point because Moore's head movement was legal, his right foot appeared to move slightly, with his heel seemingly rocking backward before the snap.
Speaking after the game, Moore accepted responsibility while acknowledging that he had not reviewed the footage to determine exactly what happened.
“I mean, I've just got to be better. I still haven't gotten a chance to look at it, but, regardless, I've just got to be better,” he said, according to ESPN's Nate Taylor. “With [the game] being so tight, the situation that it was, it just hurts even more.”
Moore was also asked whether he believed the officials made the correct decision but declined to offer a definitive assessment before watching the film.

Kansas City will attempt to end its losing streak when the New York Jets visit Arrowhead Stadium next Sunday.
