The Kansas City Chiefs snapped a ten-year drought against the Denver Broncos in a 31-10 opening night win that became a showcase game for free agent addition Kenneth Walker III, who set a Patrick Mahomes-era team record.

Walker dazzled fans en route to a 23-carry, 173-yard, one rushing touchdown performance that also included a receiving touchdown. The performance led to a string of excited media reactions including from former NFL Pro Bowl quarterback Robert Griffin III, who shared a bold take on Walker III.

“Kenneth Walker III was the best addition by any team in the NFL this offseason,” Griffin III succinctly wrote.

The game also marked the return of offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, who served in the position from 2018 to 2023. The Chiefs were balanced on offense against last season's AFC West champions, compiling a solid balance of 172 passing yards and 220 rushing yards.

The low passing game output can be chalked up to Mahomes' injury comeback, which Alex Smith spoke on in glowing terms. Mahomes still performed well enough to win, completing 15-of-27 passes for 184 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.

September 20 marks the Chiefs' next game on the calendar, and it will include Jonathan Taylor, Daniel Jones, and the rest of coach Shane Steichen's Indianapolis Colts at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. Mahomes and the Chiefs will face a team with a similar blueprint, but way less success in recent years. Another win would help put them in prime position to take their division crown back from the Broncos this season.
