Patrick Mahomes did not need a vintage performance to make Monday night feel like a win. Nine months to the day after tearing his ACL and LCL against the Chargers, the Chiefs quarterback returned to Arrowhead Stadium and led Kansas City to a 31-10 rout of the Broncos in the Week 1 finale, then offered a simple explanation for what the night meant to him.

“I just wanted to play. I had done so much rehab and so much work to kind of put myself in this position,” Mahomes told reporters after the game. “I just wanted to get out there and play. This is what you do it for.”

He was the first to admit the rust was visible. The two-time NFL Most Valuavle Player finished 15 of 27 for 184 yards with two touchdowns and an interception, posting an 86.0 passer rating while taking two sacks. He also showed the knee was fine, scrambling 15 yards up the middle for a touchdown on Kansas City's opening drive.

Mahomes gave the credit elsewhere. “I feel like I didn't play my best football, we still were able to go out there and beat a really good football team pretty well,” he said. “And it's because the guys around me stepped up and knew that they're going to have to help me as I kind of get back into the rhythm of things.”

The supporting cast delivered. Kansas City ran for 220 yards on 38 carries, highlighted by a 60-yard touchdown burst from Kenneth Walker III in the third quarter that broke the game open. Rashee Rice hauled in a 13-yard touchdown before halftime, and Walker added a two-yard receiving score early in the fourth. The defense was equally dominant, sacking Bo Nix four times and holding Denver to 176 total yards and nine first downs.

The result carries weight beyond one night. Kansas City went 6-11 last season without Mahomes, missing the playoffs for the first time since 2014 and watching Denver end its nine-year run of AFC West titles. Beating the reigning division champions by three scores in his first game back was exactly the statement Mahomes said he wanted when he set Week 1 as his target back in July.
