The Oklahoma City Thunder are up 4-1 at the start of the 2026-27 season but already have plenty of major injury concerns. With Jalen Williams and Cason Wallace already potentially out for the regular season, Chet Holmgren has joined the injury list and is expected to be out for 8-10 weeks after suffering from what has been described as a small patellar tendon tear in his right knee.

As a result, the Thunder, who were reported to be very close to finalizing the signing of former lottery pick Ochai Agbaji for their final roster spot, have decided to take a step back, per a post on X by Shams Charania. OKC will now re-consider who they can sign to fill their final roster spot as Holmgren is expected to be out for close to two months.

The 24-year-old underwent a ‘biological treatment’ on Friday after last playing for the Thunder against the Los Angeles Clippers, already having missed two games. Holmgren started each of OKC’s first three games, averaging 12 points, 9.3 rebounds and 1.7 assists.

He joins a concerning injury list that already includes Williams, who suffered a dislocated left ankle and fractured fibula against the Clippers. Meanwhile, Wallace tore the labrum in his left shoulder during the same game, with Alex Caruso, Nikola Topic and Thomas Sorber also currently sidelined.

Regardless, Agbaji recently signed an Exhibit 9 contract in September with the New York Knicks but was released on October 16. He joined the NBA after being selected as the No. 14 pick of the 2022 NBA Draft and has averaged 7.2 points and 2.7 rebounds per game on 44.8 percent shooting (33.9 percent from three) in four seasons thus far.

He was selected by the Cleveland Cavaliers but has been a bit of a journeyman in recent seasons, and for now will continue looking for his next team. It remains to be seen how OKC will not attempt to fill their final roster spot for the season.
