Chelsea told they’re ‘definitely not’ title contenders as Xabi Alonso sets unwanted record

Chelsea are not going to be in the Premier League title race this season - there is so much wrong with the 'crazy club'.

Those are the thoughts of Adrian Durham, who watched on as the Blues were beaten 3-0 by Brentford on Friday night.

Keith Andrews outclassed Xabi Alonso at the Gtech Community Stadium as his side moved up to third in the table.

Meanwhile, Chelsea dropped down to seventh after being handed their second loss of the season in just five games.

The teams went in goalless at half time, but Brentford came out the much better side in the second half, opening the scoring just after the hour mark through Jaidon Anthony.

Igor Thiago then made it two with nine minutes to go and ex-Liverpool man Fabio Carvalho added the third in stoppage time.

The impressive result handed the Bees their first-ever Premier League home victory over Chelsea.

They were winless in five meetings beforehand, but now Xabi Alonso is the first Blues manager to lose on the road against them.

Chelsea out of the Premier League title race

A 3-0 loss for Chelsea has them sitting on seven points after five games and already five points off the top of the table.

That could increase to eight if Arsenal or Manchester City win their matches across the upcoming weekend of action.

And talkSPORT's Durham has already ruled them out of challenging for the Premier League title this campaign.

Speaking after the full-time whistle, he said: "So many questions about this Chelsea performance...fundamentally, they are definitely not Premier League title contenders, we can see that.

"I think there's so much wrong with them."

Arsenal legend Martin Keown added: "It's extremely disappointing from a Chelsea point of view, we were never really convinced.

"The wealth that the club has and the players they buy, but then you see that tonight...it wasn't particularly convincing."

He later continued: "That is a wake-up call for Chelsea."

And Durham then concluded: "They're a crazy club, Chelsea. They started with a 36-year-old in midfield and finished with a 16-year-old in midfield. That's how crazy they are."

Jordan Henderson, formerly of Brentford, made his first start for Chelsea before academy prospect Madhi Nicoll-Jazuli was brought on to join him for the final stages of the match.

Jason Cundy's comments come back to bite him

Chelsea superfan Jason Cundy would have been watching their defeat to Brentford behind his hands on Friday.

Not only because of the poor performance, but because just before the season started, he predicted the Blues to win the title.

“I’m going to make a statement now. There is no reason why Chelsea cannot win this title. In fact, I’m going to say it. Chelsea will win the title," Cundy said at the start of August.

“There is something about Chelsea. We have got a cheat code. I’m not proud of it, but we can win the title for a number of reasons.

“Have you seen our front three? Joao Pedro, Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer - Palmer’s had a rest, Joao Pedro’s had a rest.

“Our midfield, the recruitment at the back. It almost certainly looks like we could be playing three at the back with someone in Xabi Alonso, who knows how to win a title.

“One game a week, we saw how beneficial that could be when Antonio Conte came in, went to three at the back. Win the title. History is going to repeat itself."

But after losing in such a fashion, it seems Cundy's title shout may have been a little bit too ambitious.

And Jamie O'Hara has made sure to rub it in, posting an edited image of Cundy dressed as a bee and writing: 'Up the Bees'.
