The Los Angeles Chargers are already reshuffling their wide receiver room after a disastrous start to the season.
Los Angeles placed rookie wide receiver KeAndre Lambert-Smith on injured reserve and signed veteran Gary Jennings to the active roster, the team announced Tuesday. According to ESPN's Kris Rhim, Lambert-Smith is dealing with a hamstring injury.
The move comes as the Chargers are already monitoring Ladd McConkey's rib injury ahead of their Week 2 matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders.
Lambert-Smith wasn't part of the offensive game plan during Sunday's 26-14 loss to the Arizona Cardinals. He entered the opener as Los Angeles' fifth or sixth receiver and played exclusively on special teams, but losing him still takes away depth at a position that suddenly has some uncertainty. Jennings now gets an opportunity to provide it.
The Chargers have several days before they'll know whether McConkey can suit up against Las Vegas. The star receiver scored a touchdown before leaving Sunday's game, and his absence would be considerably more damaging than losing Lambert-Smith.
Los Angeles could use all the help it can get after an ugly opener.
The Chargers were held scoreless in the second and fourth quarters against Arizona as the offense struggled once the Cardinals adjusted to Mike McDaniel's game plan. Justin Herbert and company now have to find answers quickly with an AFC West matchup coming next.
Lambert-Smith's injury won't drastically change the offense by itself, but it leaves the Chargers thinner while they wait for clarity on McConkey.
The Bolts could benefit from bringing in another veteran receiver, but general manager Joe Hortiz may be hesitant to do so after stating toward the end of training camp that the team wasn't planning on it.
