Michigan has lost two straight games, and the offense has been criticized heavily by pundits, former staff members, and even players in the locker room. Leaked texts from Michigan tight end Zack Marshall show internal criticism of the offense.

Meanwhile, former staffer Connor Stallions also criticized the offense, as did current analyst and former Ohio State coach Urban Meyer, calling the offense a train wreck.

Now even more college football experts are piling on, criticizing offensive coordinator Jason Beck and the offense as a whole, per Bruce Feldman of The Athletic.

“I think they’ve got a misalignment in what their players can do and what they’re trying to do offensively, so it’s a scheme fit issue,” said Joel Klatt of Fox Sports, who has been on two of the Michigan broadcasts this year.

The Michigan offense is currently scoring just 23 points per game, ranking them 79th in the nation. Turnovers have been a major issue, as they are 114th in giveaways. Discipline is also a concern, as Michigan is 102nd in the nation in penalty yards per game. They are also 110th in yards per game, while sitting 105th in the pass and 80th in the run.

“I felt that film and the surrounding narrative were deceptive,” former Michigan tight end and current Big Ten Newyork broadcaster Jake Butt said. He was focused on the game against Oklahoma. “Sure they won, but that was more the defense dominating a struggling (John) Mateer than anything. Bryce (Underwood) had a good game running. He had no turnovers. But he put the ball on the turf twice and just got lucky to recover both.”

The Wolverines used to dominate the ground game, wearing down the opponent and then popping big runs, but that does not happen anymore.

“This offense doesn’t do that,” Klatt said. “They don’t run directly at you. They’ll run at you, but then they’ll go side to side, so there’s not that sustained direct run game that we’ve known Michigan to be, and that’s what I think these players would be best at.”

Last season, Michigan had 24 runs of 20 yards or longer, but have just one this year. That came from the quarterback as well.

“They don’t have an offensive identity,” Butt said. “They’re going in each week saying, ‘How can I protect my quarterback?’ Rather than saying, ‘What do we do best?’ Their best run plays are Bryce read-options. In my opinion, Jordan Marshall is at his best as a downhill runner. I don’t understand his base run being him in Wildcat and doing fake jet sweeps with Bryce.”

The Michigan season could be slipping away, but they do have extra time to figure things out. Michigan is off this week before facing Penn State on October 17.
