Alex Tuch was one of the Buffalo Sabres' most important players for half a decade, emerging as a star forward in Western New York and helping the franchise snap a 14-season playoff drought in 2025-26.

But he was unable to come to terms on a new contract with general manager Jarmo Kekalainen. He signed an eight-year, $84 million contract before joining the Washington Capitals in an offseason sign-and-trade.

On Saturday night, he'll play against his old team for the first time.

“I’ve just got a big, dumb smile on my face just thinking about playing against those guys and loving them to death and miss them,” Tuch told reporters on Friday, per NHL.com's Tom Gulitti.

“But really happy where I am right now and it's going to be a really hard-fought battle.”

Tuch, who grew up in Syracuse, New York, was part of the trade package from the Vegas Golden Knights that sent Jack Eichel to the Strip in November 2021.

He amassed 79 points in 74 games during his first full season with Buffalo in 2022-23. Although he never replicated that production, he remained one of the Sabres' best offensive players throughout his tenure.

“We had a great group of people and a great group of players and I take a lot of pride in being the team that broke that (playoff) streak,” Tuch added.

“It just meant the world. Putting on that jersey each and every day, I took great pride in that, and I left it out there every single night. It was a sad day when I knew I wouldn't be continuing to do that, but I've been really excited about this new chapter, and really loving it here.”

The 30-year-old has hit the ground running with the Caps, leading the team in goals and sitting second in points with seven in nine games. He's averaging more ice time than any other forward and has already earned the trust of head coach Spencer Carbery.

“I see a lot of potential in this group here,” Tuch said. “I think we can achieve great things. But really hungry and for the opportunity I have here, and to try to help this team get back into the playoffs and go for the ultimate goal.”

Both the Capitals (5-4-0) and Sabres (4-4-2) have gotten off to relatively slow starts in 2026-27, and although it's early, two important points are on the line on Saturday in DC.

Puck drops on Washington-Buffalo just past 7:00 p.m. ET at Capital One Arena.
