Cal football star quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele and defensive back Kingston Lopa missed the team’s game against Virginia Tech after initially being listed as questionable. However, the Golden Bears are now expected to receive a significant boost ahead of their upcoming game against Wake Forest, as both players are reportedly set to return to action.

ESPN insider Pete Thamel reported the positive update of having two of California’s key players back in the lineup.

“Cal’s two best players are set to return against Wake Forest — QB Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele and DB Kingston Lopa. Both missed last week dealing with concussions,” Thamel wrote.

Sagapolutele sustained a head injury during California’s 39-31 loss to UNLV. The quarterback hit his head on the turf late in the first half and did not return after showing symptoms consistent with a concussion. His injury forced the Golden Bears to turn to their backup as they attempted to stay competitive against UNLV.

Backup quarterback Jackson Brousseau stepped in and finished the game by completing 19 of 32 passes for 200 yards and two touchdowns. In Sagapolutele’s absence, Brousseau also started against Virginia Tech and helped California secure a narrow 25-22 victory.

However, Sagapolutele’s potential return remains particularly important for the Golden Bears’ offense given his stellar contribution. Before exiting the UNLV game, he completed 19 of 27 passes for 195 yards and a touchdown. Through the season, he has accumulated 1,180 passing yards, eight touchdowns and five interceptions.

Lopa also sustained a concussion during California’s loss to UNLV. The defensive back was evaluated on the sideline but did not return to the game.

The potential returns of both players represent welcome news for California as the team prepares for its next challenge. Sagapolutele’s availability would strengthen the Bears’ offense, while Lopa’s return would provide additional depth and experience to the defensive secondary.

However, both players’ participation remains subject to medical clearance and the team’s concussion protocols.
