Todd Monken made a declaration about the quarterback protection after the Cleveland Browns allowed Deshaun Watson to absorb eight sacks in their loss to the New York Jets on Sunday afternoon.
Going into the game, Cleveland had great momentum going its way. After losing the season opener, they won their last three games to have a solid 3-1 start to the campaign. They looked to extend the streak to four, but they took steps back by losing 17-12 to New York on the road.
One key aspect was Watson's lack of protection. The Jets got to collect eight sacks, limiting Watson with the intense physicality and defensive stops. Monken reflected on the loss after the game, demanding better protection from the offense line with regard to Watson.
“Let's just say this, eight sacks is a season-high. I hope like hell the rest of the time I'm here, we don't have a game we have eight sacks,” Monken said, per reporter Camryn Justice.
