Todd Monken had to wait through torrential rain, a lengthy weather delay, and a tense fourth-quarter finish. The Cleveland Browns head coach, however, finally has his first NFL victory. Cleveland defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 23âÂÂ19 at Raymond James Stadium after severe thunderstorms forced both teams into the locker rooms for roughly two hours.
Once play resumed, the Browns showed the composure Monken had demanded throughout training camp. They used timely offensive execution and crucial defensive stops to protect their lead. Deshaun Watson provided the offensive spark. He completed 24 of 30 passes for 238 yards and two touchdowns. Those included a 55-yard strike to Denzel Boston and a go-ahead score to Blake Whiteheart. Tampa Bay mounted a late push. ClevelandâÂÂs defense, though, stiffened in the red zone to preserve the victory. It gave Monken a breakthrough in his first season leading the franchise.
The victory moves Cleveland to 1âÂÂ1 entering Week 3. It also provides valuable stability after a turbulent opening stretch. WatsonâÂÂs efficient performance also temporarily quieted questions about whether the Browns could turn to Shedeur Sanders. This gives the veteran quarterback important breathing room. MonkenâÂÂs team still has areas to address, of course, particularly on third down and in pass protection. That said, the road victory demonstrated resilience under difficult circumstances. The extended interruption could easily have disrupted ClevelandâÂÂs rhythm. Yet, the Browns regrouped and delivered when the game was ultimately decided. For Monken, the result validates the resilience-first identity he has emphasized since taking over. This win also gives Cleveland an opportunity to build momentum heading toward its home opener at Huntington Bank Field.
