Todd Monken knows that Shedeur Sanders performed well against the New Orleans Saints, but he won't talk about changing anything in the quarterback room following the Cleveland Browns' 23-22 overtime loss on Sunday afternoon
Monken is going through the first year of his head coaching career with the Browns. He has exceeded expectations so far, having Cleveland first with playoff contention throughout the first nine weeks of the season.
Sanders is halfway through the sophomore campaign of his young NFL career. He started in some games as a rookie while Deshaun Watson rehabbed his Achilles throughout 2025. With Watson back in the fold, Sanders has the backup quarterback duties.
However, an opportunity has opened up for Sanders. Watson is dealing with an injury, paving the way for Sanders to handle starting duties for at least one game. He completed 19 out of 31 passes for 297 yards and two touchdowns while rushing 10 times for 28 yards.
Monken reflected on Sanders' performance after the game, per reporter Zac Jackson. He noted that he won't discuss the quarterback situation, focusing on what happened in the game instead.
“Monken said he’s not ready to talk about the quarterback situation,” Jackson wrote.
“He was mostly saying it’s 15 minutes after a game. He wants to talk about the game. There’s no good answer he could give in this spot even if he thinks there’s a real decision to make.”
How Todd Monken, Browns performed against Saints
Shedeur Sanders put together a strong display in his starting debut this season. However, his efforts weren't enough as the Browns came up short in a 23-22 heartbreaker on the road to the Saints.
It was a game of field goals as both teams couldn't record touchdowns until the fourth quarter. They were even at 16 apiece going into overtime, seeing them score touchdowns respectively. However, Cleveland attempted to go for the win following Sanders' second touchdown pass with a two-point conversion, but it was unsuccessful.
Quinshon Judkins led the run game with 15 carries for 43 yards. Denzel Boston topped receivers with six catches for 98 yards. KC Concepcion came next with four receptions for 85 yards and a touchdown, while Harold Fannin Jr. caught two passes for 42 yards and a touchdown.
The Browns will look to bounce back in their next matchup, being at home. They host the Houston Texans in Week 10 as kickoff commences on Nov. 15 at 1 p.m. ET.
