With Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson making his first start in 693 days, it ended up being pedestrian in the 34-10 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, as the question of who should start between him and Shedeur Sanders will grow louder. With Watson starting the Browns' regular-season opener with an interception on the first drive and ending up having a disappointing outing, head coach Todd Monken would defend the 30-year-old.

Speaking after the loss, Monken said that while Watson's performance is integral to the offense, he believes it's “unfair” to talk about his outing right after the defeat.

“So we're going to analyze everything of how we do it, how we coached, starting with me, how we do it offensively, defensively, and Deshaun is a part of that. Always has been, always will be…and then we'll assess it and go forward. But I really want to just…for today, speak about today,” Monken said, according to Mary Kay Cabot.

“And until I really get a chance to watch it and really drill down, it's unfair for me to really comment on any one given player because it's never as bad as you think,” Monken continued. “And it's usually never as good as you think. Now it's hard to say that right now because we didn't play very well. We really didn't.”
