Deshaun Watson walked into halftime in Tampa with his starting job under scrutiny and his offense stuck in neutral. He walked out with a request for Todd Monken, and then delivered on it. The Browns quarterback led a second-half comeback in Sunday's 23-19 upset of the Buccaneers at Raymond James Stadium, his first win as a starter since Week 2 of the 2024 season.

“Making plays, telling ‘Monk' at halftime just to trust me with the ball in my hands and let me just go out there and just operate,” Watson said in the dugout. “Let him just scheme up all the plays and trust his mindset and let's go execute.”

Cleveland needed it. The Browns trailed 9-6 at the break with just 59 net yards, and the ground game never showed up, finishing with 44 yards on 23 carries. After Tampa Bay went up 16-6 early in the third quarter, Watson took over. He finished the second half 17-of-21 for 183 yards and two touchdowns.

The first was a 55-yard catch-and-run by Denzel Boston that tied it at 16 late in the third. The second put Cleveland ahead for good. Facing a 19-16 deficit, Watson converted four third downs on the go-ahead drive before hitting tight end Blake Whiteheart for a 17-yard score with 3:51 remaining.

The finish took patience. A lightning suspension halted play at the two-minute warning for two hours and 12 minutes, and Cleveland's defense closed it out with a red-zone stand after the restart.

Watson finished 24-of-30 for 238 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions, adding a team-high 22 rushing yards. His 121.9 passer rating was his third-highest as a Brown, and the win snapped a six-game losing streak in his starts, the longest active skid among NFL quarterbacks.

The context made it matter more. Watson missed all of 2025 with an Achilles injury, and after a 34-10 loss in Jacksonville in Week 1, questions about his job security followed him to Tampa. He did not sound rattled. “I'm right where I'm supposed to be,” Watson said. “Every week I'm getting more confident and more comfortable with myself.”

Monken declined to commit to Watson for next week, saying only that he wanted to enjoy the win. The Browns, now 1-1, host Carolina on Sunday.
