The Cleveland Browns are already making changes to their backfield after a disastrous start to the season.
Cleveland placed running back Dylan Sampson on injured reserve and signed Jaleel McLaughlin to the active roster from the practice squad, according to ESPN's Daniel Oyefusi. The Browns also added running back Eric Gray, tackles Obinna Eze and Xavier Truss, and punter Wes Pahl to the practice squad while releasing cornerback D'Angelo Ross and defensive tackle Chris Williams.
Sampson is going to miss a lot of time. He did not carry the ball, but did have two kick returns for 64 total yards, with a long of 37.ÃÂ McLaughlin now gets his opportunity to fill that void after beginning the season on the practice squad, while Gray gives Cleveland another option to develop behind him. Unfortunately, the Browns have much bigger problems than their running back depth.
Cleveland was crushed 34-10 by the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 1 and now heads into a matchup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers searching for answers on offense. Much of the attention will once again fall on Deshaun Watson.
The veteran quarterback remains Cleveland's starter, but patience could quickly disappear if the offense continues to struggle. Shedeur Sanders is waiting behind him, and every poor Watson performance will only increase calls for the Browns to see what they have in the younger quarterback.
Week 2 is obviously early, but Cleveland can't afford another offensive performance resembling what happened in Jacksonville.
Losing Sampson doesn't make fixing the offense any easier. McLaughlin will now get his chance to help stabilize the backfield while Watson attempts to prove he should remain the Browns' answer under center.
