Milwaukee Brewers catcher William Contreras was named World Series MVP after a fantastic five-game performance against the Tampa Bay Rays. Contreras had an RBI double in the clinching Game 5, giving him eight hits and four RBIs over the five games.
Fresh off winning his World Series titles of world champion and MVP, Contreras quickly claimed yet another title for himself, although in a humble and respectful way.
“I don't want to offend any of the other catchers in the league. The last thing I want to do is offend any of them,” Contreras said through an interpreter, per ESPN. “But sitting up here today, champion of the world, I feel like I'm the best catcher in the league. Again, that's no disrespect to any of them. That's the last thing I want to do. But today I feel like I'm the best catcher in the world.”
Article Continues BelowBased on the postseason performance Contreras just put together, he has made quite a compelling case to being called the top catcher. He was outstanding with his bat, hitting .373 with three home runs and nine RBIs over the course of the playoffs. He had three straight multi-hit games in the World Series to help the Brewers build a commanding 3-0 lead over the Rays. Then there's his defense and pitch framing, which was also top-notch. He threw out four runners and won 10 of 13 ABS appeals.
It doesn't get much better than that for a catcher on both sides of the ball. Add the fact that he helped the Brewers win the championship, and it will take something special to take the title of “best catcher in the world” from Contreras.
