LOS ANGELES — In their final big-name move of the summer, the LA Clippers reached an agreement on a new contract with free agent guard Bradley Beal. Beal opted out of the final year of his deal before free agency started, which led many to believe he could be on his way to a championship contender following an injury-riddled year in Los Angeles.
Beal ultimately agreed to a new two-year, $13.2 million deal to remain with the LA Clippers with a player option. They will also get his early bird rights next summer, which means they'll be able to sign him to a bigger deal in the offseason should he opt out.
But why did Beal, who had a number of free agency options this summer that could also lead to a potential NBA Championship, end up re-signing with the Clippers after trading away Kawhi Leonard and officially entering a transitional period out of the previous era of basketball?
Sources told ClutchPoints over the summer that teams like the Miami Heat and Philadelphia 76ers were teams interested in potentially signing the 33-year old guard.
According to Beal, championship contention was not the most important thing to him.
“It's like I said, what is my goal?” Beal explained. “Obviously, I'm getting older, I can go try to win and go chase winning and I had plenty of opportunities to go to go do that, but I can't be of service to them either if I'm not healthy. My biggest thing is being healthy and making sure that I can consistently play, consistently be available. It's been a knock on me the last four or five years. And I can't shy away from that. My biggest thing is who gives me the best advantage of being available, being myself consistently, and I have a great relationship with the staff here and I entrusted them with putting me in that position. I feel like if I went anywhere else, I'd be starting all over again, kind of putting a lot of unnecessary stress pressure on myself to perform and do things and I can't answer or necessarily check that box yet. So give myself time to check some of those boxes before making those types of decisions.”

Even the NBA's investigation into Kawhi Leonard, the Clippers, and the salary cap circumvention didn't steer Beal away or impact his free agency decision-making.
“Control what you can control,” Beal added. “That's kind of the message even with the guys that we have now on the team moving forward. Things are going to look the way they do, people are going to ask a million questions, things that we don't have answer to, but it's just noise. We know that they can be a distraction. We know that you guys are gonna do your jobs and ask and do all that, but we just have to focus on what's our biggest thing and what can we control and that's our daily habits in here, getting better, and performing at the highest level we possibly can. It was definitely a wild summer. You don't see that often, but that's the NBA for you.”
Bradley Beal is fully recovered from his hip fracture suffered after playing just six games last season. In his offseason workouts ramping up to play, Beal suffered inflammation in his right knee. He's currently rehabbing that and is hopeful not to miss much time, but inflammation can be a tricky injury to deal with.
The Clippers will play three preseason games and have loads of practice time in between. They tip off their 2026-27 regular season schedule on October 21st when they host Darius Acuff and the Sacramento Kings.
