Blake Griffin sees a problem when basketball coverage turns into a personal confrontation between a commentator and a player. In his debut on The Stepback, he took aim at Stephen A. Smith over his feud with Tyrese Haliburton during the 2025 NBA Finals.

“What in the movie villain f*** is Stephen A. doing here?” Griffin asked.

The former NBA player focused on Smith’s declaration, “Brother, you don’t stop this train,” comparing the remark to dialogue from a thriller starring Denzel Washington.

“He’s making himself part of the story, like he’s an action bad guy in a movie,” Griffin said.

Griffin argued that Haliburton already faced enough demands during his first Finals appearance. Having a television personality target him, Griffin suggested, created another distraction beyond anything involving teammates, opponents, officials, or coaches.

“It’s just a guy who decided the way he’s going to make money that month is by going after you specifically,” he said.

Blake Griffin questions accountability among NBA insiders

Griffin also challenged how NBA insiders operate, pairing another screen reference with a complaint about the consequences of inaccurate reporting.

“They’re like the Jack Reacher of sports reporting,” he said.

His comparison centered on reporters who understand the boundaries of their work but disregard them when those boundaries interfere with pursuing information. Griffin then questioned what happens when an insider delivers an incorrect scoop.

His answer: “Nothing.”

“It’s a job with a huge profile and zero accountability,” Griffin said, comparing the profession to weather forecasting and politics.

Across both critiques, Griffin questioned the people delivering basketball news. Smith drew his attention for inserting himself into Haliburton’s Finals experience, while insiders drew scrutiny over whether their mistakes carry meaningful professional consequences.
