The first half of the Buffalo Bills’ Week 6 matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders made headlines for safety CJ Gardner-Johnson’s spitting controversy, which resulted in his ejection from the game. The incident also became a talking point during Bills head coach Joe Brady’s postgame press conference.

Brady did not shy away from expressing his frustration over Gardner-Johnson’s incident, saying that such behavior was unacceptable and needed to be addressed within the team.

“I didn't know anything other than there was a commotion,” Brady said. “I haven't had an opportunity to see the clip or see what's happened. The discipline of our football team has to improve, and that sure as hell can't happen.

“Our team is bigger than that; the situation is bigger than that. Everything is bigger than that. It can't happen, and it definitely has to be addressed.”

Gardner-Johnson was seen jawing with Las Vegas tight end Brock Bowers and other Raiders players. Broadcast replays appeared to show Gardner-Johnson spitting in Bowers’ direction as the tight end turned away.

Following the incident, the officiating crew ejected the Bills safety, forcing Buffalo to play the entire second half without one of its starting defensive backs. Moreover, he could face a fine and suspension later this week.

Meanwhile, Gardner-Johnson also expressed regret over his actions, saying that his inability to control his emotions had put his teammates in a difficult position.

“I’ve got to be a better player, I’ve got to be a better vet,” Gardner-Johnson said. “I let my emotions get above me, and I hurt my team.”

Fortunately for Buffalo, the team did not allow the controversy to determine the outcome of the game. The Bills’ defense continued to compete despite losing Gardner-Johnson, with rookie cornerback Davison Igbinosun's stellar contribution.

The Bills ultimately held on for a 33-30 victory over Las Vegas, improving their record to 5-1.
