The No. 3 Notre Dame Fighting Irish suffered a 28-24 defeat to No. 8 BYU in a game that was marred with controversy. Aside from a questionable no-call pass interference on the final play of the game, the Fighting Irish were also on the wrong end of a clock gaffe that denied them one more play.
In the aftermath of the game, the Big 12 acknowledged that the referees made a big mistake by not putting one second back on the game clock after that play.
“Following the Big 12’s review of the final play of Saturday’s Notre Dame-BYU game, it was determined that time remained on the clock when the ball hit the ground and the play was incorrectly cleared by the replay officiating crew,” the statement read, per The Athletic. “The Conference will conduct a complete review of its end-of-game officiating process in advance of next week’s games.”
Replays of the final play showed the ball intended for Irish wide receiver Jaden Greathouse hit the turf with one second left on the clock. Based on the rule, Notre Dame should've had one more play on the BYU 8-yard line.
