Bears head coach Ben Johnson praised third-string quarterback Case Keenum after Monday night’s win over the Eagles, but Johnson wasn’t ready to say whether Keenum will start again on Sunday against the Jets.
“It’s all about Case Keenum,” Johnson said. “What he was able to do here tonight, I thought he did an extraordinary job. When the running game’s not going, being able to lean into the passing game as a play caller . . . He played really efficient football and I couldn’t be more proud of him for that.”
Keenum started against the Eagles because Caleb Williams is out with a hamstring injury and second-string quarterback Tyson Bagent spent most of the week in the league’s concussion protocol. Bagent was active as the Bears’ No. 2 quarterback, and Johnson said it’s too soon to say whether Bagent will be No. 1 against the Jets.
“We’ll have a discussion as a coaching staff and we’ll see where we need to go from here,” Johnson said. “But I said it last week and I’ll say it again: There was a reason Tyson ended training camp as our No. 2 quarterback.”
Johnson said the Bears have three quarterbacks they can win with.
“Whether it’s Caleb, whether it’s Tyson, whether it’s Case,” Johnson said, “we’ve got one of the best quarterback rooms in the NFL.”
