The San Francisco 49ers reloaded with a familiar face in defensive tackle DeForest Buckner. Yet the franchise needed to clear room for the former Indianapolis Colts defensive tackle. So cornerback Jack Jones gets sacrificed here.

SF made the decision to release the veteran cornerback, with ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter helping confirm the move Wednesday.

Jones leaves with 11 tackles and six solo stops in seven games played. He handled nickelback duties mostly for the 49ers and broke up three passes.

The 28-year-old veteran faced 21 targets during the season, allowing only 12 completions his side. He also surrendered two touchdowns in coverage against the Denver Broncos and Arizona Cardinals, all while allowing an opposing completion percentage of 57.1.

San Francisco rose as Jones' fourth different NFL stop. The Southern California native previously started his career with the New England Patriots from 2022 to 2023. He eventually landed with the Las Vegas Raiders in the latter season, which also paired him back with one of his former Arizona State coaches Antonio Pierce. Jones flourished in taking back two interceptions for touchdowns.

He later added one more pick six during the 2024 season, ultimately becoming the final one for Pierce. But Jones swatted a career-high 16 passes in his final Raiders run.

Jones spent one season with the Miami Dolphins after his Raiders departure. He broke up six passes and forced two fumbles playing for coach Mike McDaniel. But delivered a career-best 77 total tackles.

Now the 2019 NFC champion defender Buckner reunites with his former teammates. And he's joining a 49ers team that's 6-1 overall.
