The San Francisco 49ers boast one of the most recognizable NFL rosters from a names perspective and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who spoke to media on Friday, November 6, is certainly one of them. Christian McCaffrey and Nick Bosa are expected to be back for Week 9, while the 2023 Second Team All-Pro receiver Aiyuk has been working to be reinstated to the NFL after a high profile parting of ways with the 49ers.
Aiyuk hasn't played since the 2024-25 NFL season. He suffered a serious knee injury and missed team meetings leading to the voiding of about $27 million of his contract and public trollings of the 49ers franchise.
Jeremy Fowler of ESPN chimed in on the situation as Aiyuk and agent Drew Rosenhaus spoke to media. Fowler is not bullish on Aiyuk's chances of being reinstated this season.
“Aiyuk wants to get reinstated to play in the NFL. His prospects in the short term are not promising, assuming he becomes a free agent eventually,” Fowler said.
The 49ers are moving forward with a Brock Purdy-led passing game that has been beset by injuries lately. Mike Evans and Deebo Samuel aren't expected to play against the Raiders in Week 9.
Purdy commented on the Aiyuk situation recently, painting the picture of a team that likes what it has in the locker room right now with little plans of changing much. Aiyuk has a long way to go toward restoring goodwill in the NFL, even with a huge body of work behind him in the league. He is one of the better receivers the 49ers have seen in the last decade, but it appears as if his time with GM John Lynch's team is coming to a close.
